Galishoff's Dairy and Vegetarian Restaurant, 81 Rivington Street (bet. Allen and Essex)

​A popular dairy restaurant that reportedly had been in business since around 1914.
It appears in a NYPL photo from 1938 as a small storefront with the word "Galishoff's Knish Bakery and Dairy" painted on the front window. Another storefront with the word "Dairy" painted on it stands two stores away.

A 1947 photo by William Witt shows the same storefront with the words "Galishoff's Dairy Cafeteria" and in small letters: "Service and Self-service" painted on the glass.

​A review from New York Magazine of January 1974 describes a vibrant establishment with a full menu of dairy dishes. By the 1970s it seems to have become mainly a breakfast and lunch place, closing at 7pm. 

The painter Heddy Pagremanski did a series of paintings of Galishoff's in the 1970s. One can be seen here with some interesting memories of the place.
