Sylvia Manheim's memories of the cafeteria in the Allerton Coops.
My father read the same left wing Jewish newspaper [Morgn Frayheyt] which was delivered every morning at our door along with the Daily Worker. In our section X2 in the Coops.
The cafeteria was in the first of the three buildings in the basement facing Bronx Park East. The tables were like picnic tables of today with benches along side them. The cafeteria was open every evening for dinner and on Sunday for lunch only.
My memory of the food was that there was always gefilte fish and white fish salad on the menu along with cream cheese, lox, brisket, chicken and always the delicious chicken soup. There was also kasha and varnishkes as well as other vegetables. There was always tea, coffee, shtrudal and coffee cake for dessert. I'm sure there were many other items that I have no memory of. Our family would go on occasion because the prices were reasonable. I wish I could remember more because those were such wonderful times in my life. – Sylvia Manheim
An Incident at Stricoff's Bakery
After moving to Riverdale in the Bronx, we found Stricoff's Bakery, an oasis in the desert (otherwise known as the Skyview Shopping Center). I would pick up a cheese danish after stepping off the express bus each evening. Once, Mrs. Stricoff waited on me, and as she was putting my danish into a small bag, I told her that wouldn't be necessary as I was planning to eat the danish on my way up the hill. She replied, "I'll just put it half-way in". - George Ott
